Ever since Dubai was announced as the hosts of Expo2020, there has been a steady increase in cost of living; accentuated by a drastic increase in house rents across the city. Just a quick browse of online real estate advertisements are not very encouraging – small houses at high rents.
This is the reality of season here in Dubai, hype and expectancy of something yet to happen causes a surge in costs. Looking for a new house at this time is quite a discouraging and frightening experience. I have to be honest, sometimes I’m left wondering what kind of house we will end up moving into.
But thank God for His word which speaks life and brings hope.
Yesterday during my Bible reading, I was on John 11 which talks about Lazarus. If you’ve never read or heard about this, you can read it here.
Lazarus was sick, Jesus was called for by his sisters Mary & Martha. This was a family well known to and loved by Jesus. Yet Jesus does not rush to this family’s aid immediately. Instead Jesus goes to Mary & Martha, Lazarus had already died and was buried fours days. Long story short, Jesus performs a miracle and Lazarus is back to life. You can read about this in the above link.
What did I learn from this passage that I can apply to our situation:
1. God’s Window Opens when Mine Closes
In life we look to seize opportunities and when those windows of opportunity closes, we are made to believe all hope is lost. But with God, it is not the same. In this story, everybody expected Jesus to heal Lazarus while he was still alive. When he died everyone thought the window of opportunity was closed. But when Jesus turned up, a miracle happened. Miracles happen not because we were able to seize the opportunity, rather its because Jesus turns up at the right moment
2. God’s Glory over My Plans
Think about this – if Jesus would have turned up at the first moment he heard that Lazarus was sick and healed him, this story most likely would be remembered for how Mary & Martha were able to influence Jesus at their word and will. Rather, Jesus decides to show up and pull off a miracle in His own time and will. Thus bringing all Glory to Him alone.
One thing for sure is this – Jesus all along knew the situation and its criticality . He was not caught by surprise that Lazarus was sick and would die. Yet, He did what He did so that through this situation Jesus would show who is in control even when things seem to be out of our control.
We have another few months to go before we handover our house back to the landlord. Reading John 11 yesterday was a timely reminder that as long as the LANDLORD (a.k.a Jesus) turns up at the right time, all will be well.
Whatever your situation might be, we encourage you to hold on to what the promises of God are. God is never late, neither is He early. But when we choose to put our trust and hope in Jesus, He turns up at the right time with a miracle that will Glorify His name.
